Real Street brought out a few veterans and of those vets, 3 were proudly waving the Vortech flag. The 2010 opener saw the return of “Uncle Robin” Lawrence teamed up with newcomer Dan Baumann, as well as Paul Wiley, and Paul Alfeo. All 3 cars powered by smog legal, V3-Si boosted, pushrod motored Fox Body coupes.
Dan locked up the #1 qualified position cracking off a 9.54@141. Paul Wiley and Paul Alfeo would grab the #3 and #5 positions, posting ETs of 9.70 & 9.84 respectively.
During the 1st round of elimination racing both of the Pauls ended up beating themselves due to unfortunate redlight starts while Dan Baumann ran a 9.63 to dispose of Dave Ginter. Dan grabbed a 2nd round BYE run into the final where he would face Jim Breese’s modular powered supercharged machine. Identical .07 reaction times set the pace for a good side by side race but when the smoke cleared, the win light, unfortunately, was not illuminated in Dan’s lane as his 9.64 wasn’t quite enough to outrun the 9.51 posted by the winner.
But hey… for a newcomer racing his 1st event of the season we couldn’t be happier with the #1 qualifying and runner up effort displayed by Dan and Uncle Robin in Bradenton. Congrats fellas and hopefully this was simply taste of the good things to come as the season progresses.
