In Joliet, the Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing once again proved to be the place to be for some of the best drag racing action anywhere!
Bob “SpongeBob” Curran lit the ranks of Xtreme Street on fire with his Vortech V-24 Xi Supercharged Strange Engineering Corvette when he charged through the weekend, taking the win, the make-up final win from the previous event in Atlanta, setting the new E.T. and Top Speed Records, and rocketing himself to #1 in the points standings. Not bad for one weekend, Bob!
Brian Mitchell conquered the Renegade class once again to take the win. Mitchell met Tim Matherly and his 2010 Mustang in the finals, and it was a two blue Mustang face off. Matherly put up a valiant effort, but Mitchell’s 8.48 put him a tenth and a half ahead of the stripe. Expect to see Mitchell back in the Renegade Championship spot this year, as his significant points lead has him comfortably on top.
Terry “Beefcake” Reeves brought out his 2nd shop car, a 2014 Ruby Red Mustang GT Automatic. They had just picked up the car, and Beef & crew had their work cut out for them getting it ready for the race. They had recently made some changes to the Blue 2011 car, and had a set of Stainless Works headers, and a Circle D converter available for the new build. With plans for much larger numbers in the future, they opted to go with a Vortech V-7 JT competition kit which Reeves has already proven can make over 1000rwhp and 8 second e.t.’s. For fuel, the car got a set of Injector Dynamics ID 850’s and a Vortech Maxflow FPB Fuel Pump Voltage Booster. After the installation at Finish Line Performance and a tune from Lund Racing, he loaded his wife and kids (plus luggage) in the car, and headed on the 5 hour drive to Joliet. Terry states the automatic transmission averaged 25 mpg, which if you ask us is not bad for a car with around 700 horsepower at the crank!
“With no time for testing before the race, we were going into the biggest NMRA event of the year. Between some luck and some good driving, we were able to make the finals for the 3rd year in a row at the NMRA / NMCA Superbowl of Street Legal Drag Racing. We also took home our 2nd win in a row. In addition, team NMRA laid down a butt kicking on the NMCA guys and we took home our 2nd Superbowl ring as well! As we have seen over and over again, the Vortech / Paxton systems have proven to be the front runners in quality, price, and performance on the Coyote platform!”
Dave Ginter qualified in the top half of the XTreme Street field with a 8.15 at 172mph, but was having a tough time getting his tires to hold on the 120+ degree track temps, and ended up going out in the semis to the #2 qualifier. With a little more seat time, Ginter and crew are confident they will get that 7 second slip.
Next up was the NMCA Muscle Car Nationals in Bowling Green, KY for some more great racing action.
Bob Curran is on an extreme streak in Aeromotive XTreme Street, winning 3 in a row and now having quite a comfortable points lead in the standings. One thing is for sure, his Vortech V-24 Xi Supercharged LSX powered Corvette is a force to be reckoned with right now!
Jason Lee has almost gotten his new V-24 XB105 Supercharged setup dialed in for his Street Outlaw Mustang, running a string of 7.40’s at over 190 miles an hour, and was narrowly edged out in the finals by John Kolivas. He also thrilled the crowd (and somehow avoided any damage) with his EPIC wheelie in the 3rd Round Qualifier that saw him still on the back tires well past the 1,000 foot mark.
